Last night I turned on the Grammy's. It would be hard for me to say I actually actively "watched" the Grammys. It was more of a blank stare into an alternate universe. It as as if I were watching a world I didn't understand and had never encountered before. As I watched the long string of celebrities walk the red carpet and take the mic of the Staples Center a familiar question came to mind, the same question I had during my high school graduation ceremony. "Who are all of these people?"
Out of a class of six hundred there were, quite naturally, students I had spent twelve years of school with who I had never met. I didn't know half of my peers. As the jumbo screens at the Grammys flashed pictures of recording artists, clips from the latest music videos and montages of the past year's hits I realized I had never seen half of the faces on the screen. The celebrity names and songs sounded as foreign as the French language.
Each live Grammy performance further separated me from the world being displayed on TV. The outfits (or lack-there-of), most of the lyrics and the multi-colored flashing lights assaulted my eyes and ears. As I watched barely-clothed women dance while men sang about the bare female body I felt sick to my stomach. The depravity and immorality parading on stage was worse than a high school full of rebellious teenagers.
As I clicked off my TV screen well before the ceremony came even close to ending my heart began to break for the emptiness of the world I had just witnessed. Every one of those celebrities was created in the image of God, no different than me. They were given gifts and talents and the opportunity to know Christ, just like me. And just like me every guest in attendance was and is a sinner. Just like me.
For many award show seasons I have chosen not to turn on the TV. I haven't wanted to take in the sight of this lost world or hear its depraved music but last night I needed to see it. I've scoffed at celebrity sinners and deemed them a lost cause. Where is the hope for the masses who believe their sin is glorious, fun and worthy of a golden statue?
But last night I was compelled to watch because I needed to see the sin on the screen to be called into prayer action. I needed to be reminded of how very dark sin's pit truly is and how tight its hold on this world. I needed to be reminded that the culture and the precious children of God who play by its rules are perishing with star-studded fanfare and brilliant lights. I had to look upon the demeaning and the demoralizing to remember that Hollywood and its fans are in desperate need of deliverance.
What I learned last night during the Grammys was that I have been complacent in my prayers for the celebrity culture of my generation. I've chosen to ignore the cries for help being belted out on TV screens and radio waves. These people are perishing. They are living for the sins of today and dishonoring the God of eternity. They have traded obedience and morality for corruption, sex and sin. They have given their bodies over to the ways of the flesh and lost their souls.
But it isn't too late. With God there are no hopeless cases. The culture is never too far gone for God to redeem, save and restore. The Grammy stage is not out of God's reach. He can break into the lives of the celebrities parading around to the sounds of sin. God can open the eyes of the lost that have glamorized the human body and mocked the risen body of Christ.
The lost in Hollywood are no more lost than I was before I was saved by Christ. The doomed culture that has a death-grip on this generation is the same culture that once held me in its clutches. But thanks be to God I am not the same as I once was. God broke the chains that bound me to the sin that was slowly and surely destroying me.
And God can do the same for the guests at the Grammys and all the fans watching the spectacle on TV. God can turn their black hearts into beacons of light.
I didn't learn any new song lyrics last night and I couldn't tell you a single winner for a single award but I can tell you this much. I am going to be praying for every guest at the Grammys. In the name of Christ and by the power of His Spirit I am compelled and charged with the duty and obligation to pray for this generation because although it is lost and crumbling in the wake of sins destruction, these people are God's beloved, created by Him and worthy of saving.
May my prayers be frequent and fervent for the perishing, that God would save them quickly and redeem them completely.

Cracker Barrel: more than chicken n' dumplings
Cracker Barrel is for their chicken n' dumplings. According to their data, Cracker Barrel serves a whopping 11 million plates of chicken n' dumplings every year. Talk about a lot of dough!
As a child I helped to contribute to those 11 million orders of the Cracker Barrel classic. Chicken n' dumplings were my go-to dinner on Cracker Barrel outings. I didn't even need to look at the menu. For sides I kept it traditional with corn (off the cob) and mashed potatoes (with a generous helping of gravy). I never passed up a flaky biscuit (or two) smothered with strawberry jelly. The indulgent (and heavy) meal was one of my favorites. Being a northerner, it was my closest taste bud encounter with southern comfort food and I savored every bite.
But I loved Cracker Barrel for more than the chicken and dumplings. In fact, the food played a secondary role in the chain restaurants appeal. What I loved most about Cracker Barrel was the wait.
If you've ever been to a Cracker Barrel you've probably experienced a wait to be seated. Aside from their chicken and dumplings, Cracker Barrel is famous for their easy access to the interstate. Pair location with a menu full of carb-heavy classics and you have the perfect restaurant stop for tour bus travelers. Nearly every Cracker Barrel I've ever visited has a massive coach bus in the parking lot and a waiting list at least ten rows deep. At most restaurants this would be a deterrent, or at least an annoyance, but not at Cracker Barrel. At good old CB patrons look forward to the wait because while they wait, they get to shop in the restaurants general store.
For waiting children there are classic wooden toys, candies in big glass jars and old fashioned wind up toys. Ladies in wait for a table love to peruse the candles, scarves and home decor accessories. Men busy themselves with books and grilling tools of the BBQing trade. Even the shopping adverse don't mind the wait as long as they can snag a rocking chair on the restaurant's front porch.
Cracker Barrel has perfected the art of the wait by transforming it from a nuisance into an experience. The delay in seating is a destination for shoppers, front-porch rockers and sugar-addicted children. The treasures and treats found in the Old Country Store are so enticing that diners don't bat an eyelash upon hearing, "The current wait time is thirty minutes." The soon-to-be-diners are too busy being current shoppers.
I'm sure Cracker Barrel would like to take credit for the genius of their restaurant's old country store design but the "enjoy the wait" principle dates back to an era long before the restaurant ever opened its doors. Before 1969 the principle of enjoying a wait showed up in print, in the very word's of scripture.
The Bible established the best way to wait: joyfully. Wait with thankfulness and expectation that what is to come is even better than a heaping plate of chicken n' dumplings. In scripture God has an abundance of stories displaying the treasures to be had while waiting. Blessings for Abraham. Strength for Moses, Joseph and Job as they waited.
Since the very beginning of time, God has used periods of waiting to bless, enrich and empower.
While we wait God has for us gifts and blessings better than anything that can purchased in an old country store. While we wait God offers us rest that is more comforting and refreshing than the best of rocking chairs complete with a cold glass of Sweet Tea. God uses the periods of waiting in our lives to shower us with endurance and spend intimate moments with us. He chats with us without the distraction of rolls and jelly to steal away our attention. He nourishes us with the health and vitality of His word that sticks with us longer than a plate rich in southern comfort food.
But there's a catch. To have this special time with God requires that we be told we'll have to wait. If we get seated right away we miss all all of the pleasures that are in God's old country store. We won't have the time to wander and explore the isles God has so perfectly put on display along our journey. We'll miss out on the beautiful treasures God has in store. Without the wait, we end up walk right past beauty and splendor because all we can imagine is the main course. We miss all of the goodies and treats that we could have had if only we were made to wait.
God longs for you and I to cast away our cares of the seating list and cherish the time spent in His presence while we wait for the main course. Our table will be called. Our plates will arrive int heir time because God has promised us full, bright, nourishing futures and He will not disappoint. But before we make it to that table God has designed a wait worth savoring.
So next time you're looking for a dinner destination why not try out your local Cracker Barrel. Fill up on some biscuits and order one of those 11 million plates of chicken n' dumplings.
But first, browse the store and enjoy the wait.

Eternal Balloons, Endless Hope
Today on my morning dog walk I looked up and saw a bundle of balloons stuck in a big tree. The shiny blue and white rubber twisted and tangled around branches, their strings dangling in the wind.
As I looked up at those balloons, evidence of a night of celebration, I saw something infinitely more profound than a party. I saw my hopes and dreams.
Over the past six years I have been clutching with white knuckles my own bundle of balloons inflated with hopes for a different future and dreams of a full life. I've hung onto heart-shaped balloons, dreaming of someone to love. I've tried so desperately to keep hold of balloons blown up with the hope of health.
But recently I've started letting go of my balloons. My hands have been loosening their grip. My heart hasn't wanted to hang onto tangled strings any longer. So one-by-one I've been releasing my balloons, sending my hopes and dreams into the sky.
All the while, as I've been letting go, I've assumed that my hope and dream filled balloons have been disappearing into the sky. That's what balloons normally do. They sail up and away on the winds of change and soar off into the distance. They become specs in the sky, they fade into the clouds and become distant memories.
I figured that's where my hopes and dreams would end up, too.
Lost to the skies.
But I was wrong.
As I've been releasing my balloons, finding freedom in unclenched hands and serenity in living unfettered by tangled up strings, God has been trapping them. He's been catching my hopes and dreams on the branches of His mighty, outstretched arms. I never looked up long enough to see that He has been storing up my liberated longings. Little did I realize that the desires of my heart haven't been disappearing. They've been being kept safe.
God has been taking my hopes and dreams and weaving them into my story. Today I looked up into the trees and finally understood that by releasing my will to God He was able to grab hold of it. By giving Him the deepest desires of my heart I was actually making sure they would be safe and protected. When I gave up trying to hold onto strings that were leaving me twisted and tangled, destined to one day deflate or pop, God took hold of them and suspended them in eternity. By giving God control of my hopes I wasn't letting them float off into oblivion, never to be seen again. I was actually putting them in the ultimate place of protection, the providence of God's will and the power of His hands.
In the trees God revealed to me that He alone has the ability to hold onto the balloons of my hopes and dreams without getting tangled or letting a single desperate longing blow off into the wind. When I let Him take over the strings He is faithful to keep hold of my balloons and knit them tightly into His plan for my life.
God has not, for a single moment, let my hopes and dreams out of His sight. They aren't just a spec on His radar, floating off into space. They are close to His heart. They are in His hands. And one day they will descend back down into my life when the time, His time, is right.

An update on the home front
If you've read Pippy Love for any length of time, or even just a post or two, you've probably recognized a pattern. The writings you'll find here are usually born out of commonplace, everyday observation. The messages are rooted in the mundane. The stories bring everlasting, eternal truths to life in the most ordinary ways. That's Pippy Love and if you happen to stumble upon this blog as a matter of happenstance I invite you to stick around and explore. And if you pointed and clicked here on purpose, thank you and please do come back again.
For those who clicked on purpose and have clicked routinely, there is a chance you have read a post or two about my personal life and my journey with sickness and attempts at regain my health. When I started writing this blog back in November of 2011 I had already had my first go-round with mystery illness but I was in a period of what I would come to realize was remission. At the birth of Pippy Love I thought I was miraculously cured. My greatest challenge at that time in my history was house breaking a puppy. Little did I know that the curtain of my health saga was about to rise for its second act. Six years later that curtain has yet to fall. The story, the drama of a diseased body, continues.
Thankfully Pippy, and now Molly, are house broken. Flip flops are still doomed if left on the floor thanks to Molly who I'm convinced must be part billy goat. Other than the occasional doggie mischief, the dog days of puppy parenthood are far behind me. Of course my beloved Schnoodles still supply me with plenty of life lessons, they just don't take the shape of puddles on the living room floor.
When I embarked on this Pippy Love journey I had visions of a book full of doggie stories about life with a furry companion. My furry companion has not disappointed. Pippy has been more precious to me than I could ever imagined when she entered my life in 2011. But the journey I had envisioned ended up taking turns I never imagined and certainly didn't plan.
In the past six years I have traveled coast to coast to visit doctors and specialists. I've had all sorts of testing, from the traditional to the downright wacky. I've purchased more supplements than I could ever count or would ever want to! I've moved to different towns and different states. I've tried so many therapies, each one rich in promises of physical restoration. I've tried everything and I've tried nothing.
No matter what I've tried the result has always been the same. Progressive physical decline and another treatment option to cross off the list.
Six years in and the curtain on my health saga hasn't fallen. The show goes on.
Here on Pippy Love I have more regularly chronicled what I've learned during this show than what I've experienced and today is no exception. Yes, this is an update. I'm home, back where this whole show began, and tomorrow I'm going back to the very first doctor I ever visited. But that isn't the point of this post. That reality is simply the backdrop to what is happening center stage.
On the home front of my heart a much more captivating show is taking shape. God is writing a story with my heart and soul that can't be captured in snap shots of my suffering. In my best of writing I would never be able to convey the greatness of the script God has penned in the depths of my life during these past six years. I've tried to convey it here on Pippy Love but my attempts are feeble. God's story is too good, too unbelievable, too awe-inspiring for my vocabulary. He has taken six years that could have caused me to self-destruct and fall into a pit of despair and turned them into the best years of my life.
The best years of my spiritual life.
He has taken the plans and visions I had for my life, even for this very post, and tossed them out the window so He could rewrite the script. I haven't always wanted to let Him take the pen and I've tried my hardest to hide the paper but He's won every time.
And I'm so glad He has.
Today I am here back on the home front, back at the beginning, and God has the pen. There have been twists in this story that I barely even remember. There have been so many plots and characters and scenes that my memory can't contain them all. But they have all been wonderful because they have led me here. They've led me right back home to the heart of God.
Pippy Love has not turned out the way I thought it would. It has turned out infinitely better and so has my life. All thanks and glory is due to God because this is His story written with His pen, in His hand on His paper and I'm not ready for the end.
So carry on Pippy Love. Carry on.

I should be more like Tom Brady
I really should be more like Tom Brady.
Don't misunderstand, I don't think I should be suiting up for the football field any time soon. Can you imagine this small fry running across a field in shoulder pads, knee pads, thigh pads, a helmet and cleats? No? Me neither.
I also don't think I need to start studying up on the art of football by watching tape and sketching out game-winning plays. Sure, that's what Tom fills his 16 hour long days with when he's not on the field or in the gym but not me. I wouldn't have much use for the strategic plays and quarterbacking skills that Brady has spent his life perfecting.
I suppose I could be more like Tom Brady in my diet which would consist of only organic vegetables, free-range meats, poultry and fish, whole grains and no dairy. And did I mention, no coffee? I can go along with his sleep schedule - in bed by 8:30 PM and awake before 6 AM - but I'm keeping my coffee.
I wouldn't object to being like Tom Brady when it comes to marriage. I wouldn't object to a supermodel husband. Nor would I object to Tom's nice cushy bank account.
But that's not why I should be more like Tom Brady.
I should be more like Tom Brady in my dogged dedication to being a valuable player on God's team. I should be single-minded in my God-given purpose. Everything I do, every single decision I make, should be in pursuit of perfecting my Christ-likeness. I should make my focus resolute and unshakable. I should show up early to serve and stay late to learn. I should feast on the goodness of God's word and be sure to never miss a meal.
When it comes to practice and plays I should take a cue from the quarterback legend, Tom Brady. He remains, on and off season, Super Bowl ready. He doesn't take weeks off. He is always planning, always studying and always perfecting his skills.
Tom Brady has dedicated his life to a fleeting cause, just a silly game of sport. But God wants me to dedicate my life to something far more significant. God wants me to dedicate my life to His service. The Tom Brady qualities I'll need to be a valuable player on God's team will never be executed on a field or tallied in yards and touchdowns. They won't win a trophy here on earth. But they will lead to a glorious entrance into heaven.
In season and off, I should be steadfast and single-minded in determination to be a wholly surrendered servant of God. If I can put into practice the quarterback qualities of a football star for the glory of God I will one day see a sight more magnificent than the Vince Lombardi Trophy. I will see the golden gates of heaven and hear God say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

February 2, 2013
February 2, 2013. The date stuck in my mind like a florescent pink sticky note on the door of an empty white fridge. In my mind I went back to that date and dredged the depths of my memory for some significance in that particular day but came up with nothing. Not even an inkling of importance surfaced. I couldn't even recall where I was living in February of 2013. I tried to recall the circumstances that encapsulated that time period of my life and couldn't think of anything.
After scouring my own feeble memory I turned to the internet for help. I clicked through old pictures and FaceBook posts but nothing stood out as noteworthy. I opened up journals and the archives of Pippy Love only to discover that my creative juices hadn't been flowing on February 2, 2013. I hadn't written a single world.
I almost decided to give up searching, convinced that the pink sticky note had the wrong date or wasn't meant for me in the first place. But then I remembered one thing from February 2, 2013. I remembered Phil.
To be honest, I didn't remember anything special about Groundhogs Day 2013, which falls on February 2 of every year, but I did remember that Phil came out of his hole in the ground and made a pronouncement. A quick Google search revealed his meteorological prediction and reminded me what was so very special about February 2, 2013.
Phil didn't see his shadow. Gobbler's Knob rejoiced because spring would be coming early. Punxatawney Phil's pronouncement brought hope to every northerner. Even though February 2, 2013 was snowy and frigid, Phil's optimism lifted spirits and warmed hearts. His appearance announced to the world that winter would end. Spring, flowers and sunshine would come back once again.
As history would have it, Phil wasn't right about his weather prediction in February 2013. He didn't see his shadow but maybe he had his eyes closed because March 2013 ended up being colder than average. A deep freeze set in and lasted longer than meteorological models, or a groundhog, had predicted. Phil's timing was a month off but his hope was right on schedule.
Maybe what Phil knew when he made his prediction was that the coming two months were going to be worse than the two that had gone before it. Hands would be colder than they had been all January long. Boots would be soaked through for weeks on end. Furnaces would be working over time and so would the city's salt machines. Maybe Phil knew that we would all need a little hope to hold onto when winter lasted six, eight, even ten weeks longer.
Dear friend, today if you are in the middle of your own heart's winter, hold onto the hope of spring. I can't predict when it will come. I won't even pretend that my shadow will provide a clue for when the cold trials of your life will thaw, but I know this much. God has planned for you hope and a future. This winter will not go on forever. It may get colder before it gets warmer. It may snow harder before you see a single blade of green grass. But don't lose hope. Hold on to the promise of the coming spring because, shadow or no shadow, Phil's prognostication is always true. The seasons always change. The snow always melts. And, thanks be to God, the sun always shines again.

Can you hear me now?
"Hello?"... "Hello?"... "Can you hear me?"... "Yes I can kind of..." "Are you still there?"... "Hello?"
The voice on the other end of my phone went in an out between fits of fuzzy static. I made the ear equivalent to eye squinting as I did my best to make out my mystery caller's garbled words. In that brief, thirty-second call I felt strangely connected to Verizon's turned Sprint's "Can You Hear Me Now" Guy. At the same time I felt distinctly disconnected from the real person on the other end of the line.
To match my Verizon commercial scenario I moved around the room with a hurried aimlessness in search of a clearer signal. Finally I landed on a special foot of space that produced a clear line of communication. "Yes, I can hear you now. Can you you hear me?....Okay, great!"
Without the crackle and static I could hear my caller loud and clear. It was my doctor's office just issuing a routine appointment confirmation call. I confirmed and hung up the phone.
You may be thinking that this exchange sounds quite ordinary and you'd be right. Phone calls are prone to static and being dropped altogether. Cell phone signals are finicky business. Two inches to the right or the left can send a strong five bars down to a measly one.
It is humorous how hard we cell phone junkies try to establish a clearer signal. Many a call have been saved by simply standing on a bench or a chair or a table in the middle of a room just to achieve a stronger connection. I've been known to run around in search of an invisible signal sweet spot with a cell phone plastered to my ear, displaying the same frantic energy as a puppy in search of the source of a mysteriously tantalizing scent. We technologically advanced humans are so accustomed to being in constant contact with our fellow man that it drives us downright batty when our lines of communication break down or crackle for even a moment.
Can you imagine if we all became as accustomed to and dependent on hearing God's call with the same clarity as we do our cell phone calls? What if we all worked with as much energy and passion to hear God speak as we do the voice on the other end of our wireless connection? The world would look drastically different. My life and yours would look dramatically, miraculously different.
The strength of a 4G connection complete with the lastest in mobile phone technology can't match in importance or power the connection between God and His callers. A strong signal with God that is clear and bright has the power to save and transform. Callers who seek God's voice and won't rest until they have a clear connection are blessed with inner peace, joy and enduring faith. The messages received through the connection with God are eternal and they never change. There is never a routine call with God because each is a beautiful opportunity to hear the voice and receive the love of our Father who longs to speak to us words of truth and life.
The connection that produces strong signals with God is a connection that is established in the human heart. The only fuzz and crackle that can get in the way of hearing God's voice loud and clear comes from a heart that isn't seeking out that "sweet spot" for the Holy Spirit's signal. It isn't a broken phone or a weak line that is causing the disconnect and the muffled messages. Inferior connections are never on God's end. He never drops a call and His signal service knows no limits on bars. The connection dilemma is always on our end.
The good news is that our connection with God can always be made clear. All we have to do is look for it with the same intensity we search for a stronger signal for our cell phone. To the world we'll look sillier than a frantic phone caller shouting, "Hello?" over and over again but don't let that dissuade you. Seek first a strong and clear connection with God. Run around the room seeking out His face. Upgrade your time spent silently in His presence. Carve out a communion with Him that can't be counted in bars and fiber-optics.
When you and I hold tight to the connection we have with the Lord He meets us on the other end of line. No fuzz. No crackling. When God is on the other end we'll have the joy of saying, "Yes, I hear you now!"
